Underneath the Skin of My Mother’s Clothing

In "Underneath the Skin of My Mother’s Clothing," paintings on wood-dyed panels function as speculative medical reports crafted by Thai spiritualist-health professionals. These artwork-documents visualize the interconnected realms of physiological, psychological, and spiritual health. Drawing from my interdisciplinary background in biology, I integrate digital tools with labor-intensive handmade techniques to illuminate the human essence.

The series reimagines Thai textile weaving through the materiality of wood, envisioning a speculative future where the collapse of healthcare, food, and waste management systems compels alternative methods of diagnosing health. In this fictive world, wood acts as a diagnostic tool: human secretions interact with colorimetric dyes to reveal health conditions through the hues they produce. This concept draws inspiration from environmental colorimetric analysis and phytoremediation, where trees absorb and indicate soil contaminants.

To bring these ideas to life, I employ aniline dyes to stain wood, alongside processes like sanding, burning, and resist techniques to manipulate the grain. The resulting patterns evoke frequencies, waves, and the intricate textures of textiles, alluding to the loom as a central metaphor for weaving. Some pieces feature etched Thai symbols and motifs, representing bodily measurements and units, while others highlight subtle currents of the psyche through abstract forms.
